#34: Cheers Was Nearly a Chicago Bar Instead of a Boston One
During early development, the producers briefly toyed with setting Cheers in Chicago instead of Boston. Chicago had the right vibe — a big, sports-loving city with its own bar culture — and for a moment it seemed like a solid fit. But as the concept evolved, Boston ultimately felt more distinctive.

The city’s history, personality, and tight-knit neighborhood feel helped shape the heart of the show. Choosing Boston gave Cheers its iconic identity, from its sports rivalries to the bar’s cozy, old-school charm. But for a little while, Sam Malone could’ve been serving beers in the Windy City.
