#14: The Writers Felt Freer Once Shelley Long Left the Bar
After Shelley Long exited Cheers, the writers admitted they actually enjoyed crafting the show more. With Diane gone, they no longer had to center everything around the fiery, complicated Sam-and-Diane relationship, which had dominated so many storylines in the early years.

Her departure opened the door to a true ensemble feel. The writers could spread the humor, heart, and weirdness across the entire cast without worrying about maintaining the show’s main romance. It gave Cheers a fresh creative spark, letting every character step into the spotlight in new ways.
