#26: Branded for the Arena
Many gladiators carried permanent marks on their bodies. Slaves who entered gladiator schools were often branded or tattooed, symbols showing they belonged to the ludus. These marks were reminders of their lack of freedom and a warning against escape. To society, they were property, not free men.

The branding carried heavy stigma. Even if a gladiator earned his freedom, the marks stayed with him, showing his past for life. For some, they were scars of shame; for others, they became symbols of endurance. Either way, they proved the brutal reality behind the glory of combat.
