#24: Training with Wooden Weapons
Gladiators didn’t begin their training with sharp steel. New recruits practiced for months using wooden swords and shields. This allowed them to learn techniques, footwork, and discipline without deadly mistakes. The process built muscle memory, ensuring that when real weapons came, fighters were prepared for the brutal reality.

The wooden weapons were heavy, often more so than real ones, to make training harder. By the time a gladiator touched iron, he was strong, skilled, and conditioned. The slow, careful path from wood to steel showed how seriously Rome prepared its entertainers for the arena.
