#19: Arenas Beyond the Colosseum
When people imagine gladiators, they often picture the Colosseum. But fights took place all across the empire. Amphitheaters of every size stood in towns and cities, from Italy to North Africa. These smaller arenas gave ordinary people the chance to experience the excitement of the games firsthand.

The Colosseum may have been the grandest stage, but local amphitheaters kept gladiatorial culture alive everywhere. They brought Rome’s favorite entertainment to provincial crowds, reminding them of their place in the empire. Wherever Romans lived, the roar of the crowd and clash of swords could follow.
