#14: When Emperors Entered the Arena
Most emperors enjoyed the games from the stands, but a few wanted more attention. Commodus, one of Rome’s most infamous rulers, actually stepped into the arena as a gladiator. He made sure his fights were safe, yet the sight of the emperor fighting thrilled crowds across the empire.

For Commodus, the arena was a stage to show off his power. To some, it looked like courage; to others, disgrace. His vanity blurred the line between entertainment and politics. Every swing of his sword became propaganda, turning the games into a performance of imperial control.
