#9: The Gladiator Diet
Gladiators weren’t eating like kings. Instead of meat-heavy meals, they lived on barley, beans, and vegetables. This earned them the nickname hordearii — “barley men.” The diet may have been plain, but it gave them energy for long training sessions and brutal matches in the arena.

That simple food also built up a layer of body fat. Surprisingly, this worked like armor, helping to cushion blows and reduce blood loss from cuts. Though the rich dined on exotic dishes, gladiators relied on their humble diet to stay strong, recover quickly, and endure repeated fights.
